Lane positioning matters beyond the road test
ICBC marks lane position, but the habit matters every time you drive. New drivers often drift toward the right side, the left side, or whatever part of the hood they are using as a reference.

The practical method is to look farther down the road, compare lane-line distance in the side mirrors, use the bottom-left windshield reference, and keep balanced steering posture.

The farther down the road you look, the easier it is to stay centred. Looking only in front of the hood makes the lane position harder to judge and correct smoothly.
Your side mirrors show how far the lane lines are from the body of the car. If one side looks much closer than the other, adjust gently toward the open side.
When you are centred, the dotted lane line should disappear near the bottom-left corner of the windshield. If that reference shifts, your car has likely drifted in the lane.
When you look far ahead, it should feel like you are sitting in the middle of the lane. Do not force yourself to feel offset left just because the driver's seat is not the vehicle centre.
Holding the wheel at an angle or resting your elbow on the door can make the car hug one side for blocks. Keep a balanced steering posture so your lane position stays consistent.
