Construction Zones Explained: Speed Signs, Flaggers & Lane Changes

Read temporary speed controls and retain safety checks through a construction detour.

Video breakdown

Study the lesson by section

Each section below follows an explanation or demonstration in the video. Select a section to play from that point, then practise the skill with appropriate supervision.

0:00

Distinguish a construction warning from a posted speed limit

The worker-symbol sign warns of construction; a separate posted limit sets the maximum speed. Slow appropriately for workers and hazards, and follow the actual temporary limit. Do not treat every worker-symbol sign as an automatic legal 30 km/h zone.

1:15

Follow the flag person while checking for hazards

The traffic-control person can direct you differently from the ordinary sign or signal. Still check the blind spot and crossing: a cyclist or another road user might not follow the instruction, and you must avoid driving into their path.

2:35

Signal and check both sides of a detour

Moving around construction and returning to your side both require observation and communication. A work vehicle may move unexpectedly. Do not copy the unsignalled path of the car ahead or skip the check because you are returning to your usual lane.

3:45

Look for the controls that end the reduced-speed zone

The video discusses temporary signs, end-of-construction signs and resume-speed messages. Read the signs governing your direction and remain cautious if the endpoint is unclear. Do not accelerate simply because one patch of visible work has ended.

7:07

A posted limit still applies when workers are absent

The final clarification is important: a posted temporary speed restriction does not disappear because no one is visibly working. Follow it through its applicable extent. Avoid relying on the historical fine amounts or test-scoring claims mentioned in the recording.
