Video breakdown

Study the lesson by section

Each section below follows an explanation or demonstration in the video. Select a section to play from that point, then practise the skill with appropriate supervision.

0:02

Recognize the lane closure and adjust from highway driving

The flashing arrow appears after traffic leaves the highway. Look ahead and readjust to city congestion, rather than carrying highway speed and close following into a lane closure. Signal your own need to merge early enough to plan safely.

1:16

Make space without surprising traffic behind you

The instructor pauses to allow the waiting pickup in. Cooperate when safe, but avoid an abrupt stop that confuses or endangers the driver behind. Anticipate the merge and ease off earlier instead of waiting until vehicles are nearly bumper to bumper.

2:59

Leave gaps that make an alternating merge possible

The replay shows how tightly packed vehicles leave merging drivers unsure and stuck. Drivers in the continuing lane can see the closure too. Build a useful buffer and allow a predictable alternating pattern rather than guarding every metre of road.

5:05

Match speed to the merge happening ahead

A fast-approaching van illustrates the problem of treating congestion as a race. Keep enough space for a vehicle changing lanes and slow appropriately for the developing situation instead of rushing toward a shrinking gap.

5:59

Plan before you depend on someone letting you in

The takeaway returns to the stranded driver: close following or inattention hid the closure until a last-minute merge was needed. Look and plan farther ahead so an obstruction does not leave you relying entirely on strangers to create an escape.
