Video breakdown

Study the lesson by section

Each section below follows an explanation or demonstration in the video. Select a section to play from that point, then practise the skill with appropriate supervision.

0:22

Start a keyed-ignition vehicle correctly

The video distinguishes accessory, ignition-on and start positions. Release the key once the engine starts rather than holding the starter engaged. Learn the actual starting procedure from the vehicle manual; the demonstration is not a universal design for every car.

1:21

Use the brake and start button as required by the vehicle

For the push-button example, pressing the brake while using Start starts the car; pressing without it may only select accessory modes. Know your car’s procedure before test day rather than guessing in front of the examiner.

2:00

Recognize engine running versus electric-vehicle readiness

A combustion-engine tachometer can help show whether the engine is running. Electric and some hybrid vehicles use a Ready display and may be ready without engine noise. Confirm the correct indicator for the car you will drive.

3:03

Check fuel or charge and resolve warning lights beforehand

Arrive with sufficient fuel or charge and a roadworthy vehicle. Warning lights can indicate faults requiring attention. Do not assume a check-engine or airbag warning will be accepted because the instructor discusses examiner discretion; verify the current test-vehicle requirements.

3:53

Locate low beams, high beams and their cancel controls

Practise turning headlights and high beams on and off while parked. Some vehicles distinguish flashing from a latched high-beam setting and require headlights first. Use the actual control layout, then restore the appropriate lighting for the driving conditions.
