Read the light before the slip lane
Before you enter a slip lane, look at the traffic light ahead. Its colour can tell you what the cross traffic is likely doing.
This video explains how to handle slip lanes on an ICBC Road Test, especially when the light ahead is red and cross traffic likely has the green. The lesson is to read the signal before entering the slip lane, use the yield sign properly, position where you can see cross traffic, and proceed only when the lane is safe.
The clip shows two slip-lane examples where the driver reads the red light, thinks about cross traffic, uses the yield sign, waits for a safe gap, and then turns normally.
Use these timestamped sections to practise reading lights, yield signs, visibility, and cross-traffic priority before your road test.

A red light before the slip lane should make you ask who has the green. Often, the answer is the traffic you are about to merge across or beside.
The yield sign means you may need to slow or stop until you know the lane is safe. Do not roll through just because the slip lane looks separate.
On the second example, the driver moves into a position where cross traffic can actually be seen before deciding whether to proceed.
If cross traffic still has priority, wait. A calm yield is better than forcing a merge or turn into traffic with the right of way.
Once the traffic is clear, proceed smoothly and make the turn as normal. The key is not hesitation; it is confirming the gap first.
