Cover speed, complete stops, yellow decisions, smooth control and parking brake use.

Video breakdown

Study the lesson by section

Each section below follows an explanation or demonstration in the video. Select a section to play from that point, then practise the skill with appropriate supervision.

0:08

C1: maintain a speed appropriate to the conditions

Choose a consistent speed within the limit while responding to visibility, road width and hazards. Unnecessary slowness and speeding are different problems; the posted maximum is not a command to reach it in every situation.

0:42

C2: come to a complete stop when required

Stop fully at the required signs and red signals and before crossing a sidewalk when exiting a parking lot. A rolling stop does not become acceptable because the crossing appears quiet.

1:30

C3: stop on amber unless a safe stop is unavailable

Assess the approach, stopping room and surrounding traffic. Stop before entering when safe; avoid both racing the signal and a panicked unsafe stop. A right-turn plan must also change if yellow appears while a safe stop remains possible.

2:46

C4: accelerate and decelerate predictably

Look ahead to plan smooth speed changes. Do not stop or brake heavily without a real control or hazard, and do not launch abruptly from green. Smooth driving still needs appropriate progress when the road is clear.

3:47

C5: use gears correctly in a manual vehicle

The manual-transmission discussion covers selecting suitable gears, shifting smoothly and avoiding neutral or clutch-in coasting. Stop before changing between forward and reverse. Practise the controls appropriate to the vehicle you will drive.

4:28

C6 and C7: prevent rollback and recognize other control issues

Use brake and gear control to keep the vehicle from rolling backward on a hill, including in an automatic when needed. C7 is the additional category for speed-control errors not listed elsewhere.

5:10

C8: cover the brake as hazards develop

Move off the accelerator and prepare to brake when you identify a potential hazard. Look farther ahead so preparation happens before the situation becomes urgent, and keep the brake applied while stopped.

5:47

C9: secure parking and release the brake before moving

Apply the parking brake when parking, and fully release it before driving away. Build that habit with the vehicle’s actual hand, foot or electronic control instead of assuming transmission Park alone completes the procedure.
