Cul-de-Sacs on the Class 7 Road Test: Shoulder Checks, Turns & Yielding

Distinguish a road-end cul-de-sac from one entered off a through road.

Video breakdown

Study the lesson by section

Each section below follows an explanation or demonstration in the video. Select a section to play from that point, then practise the skill with appropriate supervision.

0:14

Check before following the road-end curve

At the road-end cul-de-sac, the route continues around a curve. Check the right blind spot before steering across possible cyclist space, and watch for a driver cutting across toward a driveway. Keep a controlled path rather than shortcutting.

1:16

Treat entry from a through road as a proper turn

The second layout requires a left turn off another road. Signal, yield to oncoming traffic and make the turn without cutting across the opposing side. Imagine the proper road centre where markings are absent.

2:25

Reassess cross traffic before exiting

The road may have been clear when you entered, but vehicles can arrive while you go around. Slow and check before joining the through road again, obeying the actual controls and yielding as required rather than relying on the earlier view.
