Close following hides the lack of exit space

A driver follows the queue into an intersection and ends up on a crosswalk. That blocks pedestrians and makes a bus's left turn harder. Watch beyond the car ahead rather than assuming its movement guarantees room for yours.

Hold behind the stop line until you can clear

Leave a useful following gap, confirm there is space beyond the intersection, and wait behind the stop line if there is not. A fresh green may eventually move the queue, but relying on that can still leave you trapped.
