ICBC expects lane changes, turns, stops, and parking to happen in locations that are safe for you and other road users. The point is not just doing the maneuver, but choosing and holding a safe position for it.
In your waiting position, keep watching the light, oncoming traffic, and pedestrians, but also look at the road you are entering. That helps you set up the correct path before the turn starts.
Do not start the left turn too early and cut across the intersection. Move a bit farther into the intersection first, then make a controlled turn into the correct lane.
If the intersection is skewed, going straight into the usual waiting position may block oncoming through traffic. Aim to line up across from the dedicated left-turn lane so their path stays clear.
For a skewed intersection, imagine how the centre divide line connects from your side to the far side, then stay to the right of that line. This keeps the front of your car out of the oncoming traffic path.
