ICBC C1 Speed Maintenance: When to Slow Down & When to Speed Up

Match progress to parking lots, raised surfaces and limited-visibility roads.

Video breakdown

Study the lesson by section

Each section below follows an explanation or demonstration in the video. Select a section to play from that point, then practise the skill with appropriate supervision.

0:17

Slow appropriately in lots and over raised surfaces

The lesson compares parking-lot bumps, residential humps and raised crosswalks. Follow posted limits and reduce further for people, visibility and the shape of the surface. The example speeds are not guaranteed safe values for every vehicle or bump.

1:38

Avoid choosing a low speed only to appear cautious

If the road is clear and conditions allow, unnecessary slow driving can confuse following traffic. Know the limit and maintain suitable progress, while remembering the limit is a maximum and real hazards always justify appropriate slowing.

2:51

Slow for a blind bend and protect pedestrian clearance

Parked cars, bushes and a missing sidewalk reduce usable space and visibility. Leave the legally required passing clearance and wait if oncoming traffic prevents it. Do not steer toward a pedestrian or cross into a lane you cannot confirm is clear.

4:09

Resume suitable progress when visibility and space improve

After the bend opens, accelerate smoothly within the applicable limit until the next reason to slow. The skill is changing speed in response to the road, rather than staying unnecessarily slow or trying to reach maximum speed immediately.
