Bike Lane Right Turns: When Can You Enter the Bike Lane?

Read solid and broken markings and protect an approaching cyclist’s path.

Video breakdown

Study the lesson by section

Each section below follows an explanation or demonstration in the video. Select a section to play from that point, then practise the skill with appropriate supervision.

Stay out of a solid bike lane on the approach

A solid bike-lane boundary continuing to the corner means you approach the turn from your vehicle lane. Do not drift into the bicycle lane to prepare a tighter turn. Check cyclists and the crossing before turning across their path.

0:56

Use a permitted broken-line area only after checking

Where markings permit positioning right, check the mirror and blind spot first. The marking does not give permission to obstruct a cyclist who is beside you or close enough to reach the area while you wait.

1:31

Consider what happens if the turn is delayed

A pedestrian or cross-traffic wait can leave your car occupying the cyclist’s route. Plan for that before moving over, and keep monitoring if a cyclist arrives later. An earlier clear check never removes your continuing responsibility to avoid a collision.
