Left Turn: Don’t Follow the Car Ahead — Judge Your Own Gap

Judge your own left-turn gap and update the plan when new traffic appears.

Video breakdown

Study the lesson by section

Each section below follows an explanation or demonstration in the video. Select a section to play from that point, then practise the skill with appropriate supervision.

0:00

Use your own view rather than following the car ahead

Enter the turn lane with proper checks. The car ahead can hide oncoming traffic, and its gap may disappear before your turn. Once it clears, reassess the signal and your own safe waiting and turning position.

0:52

Stay controlled while waiting for the oncoming vehicle

The replay criticizes creeping forward and angling left while an oncoming car is still approaching. Hold a suitable waiting position with the wheels straight until there is a safe opportunity; do not use a crosswalk-based reference in a way that obstructs pedestrians.

1:43

Update the gap when a vehicle leaves a driveway

A new vehicle joins the oncoming road from a driveway. The lesson car yields and turns behind it rather than rushing across its accelerating path. A plan made at the red light must change when the traffic changes.

3:49

Gather information well before reaching the turn

Look ahead at the signal, queue, pedestrians and cyclists while approaching. Estimating how the traffic may develop helps planning, but the final turn still depends on a fresh check of the actual gap and the receiving lane.
