Left Turns at Traffic Lights: Waiting Position, Gaps & First Available Lane

Watch the queue and yield to an opposing right turn before entering your lane.

Video breakdown

Study the lesson by section

Each section below follows an explanation or demonstration in the video. Select a section to play from that point, then practise the skill with appropriate supervision.

0:00

Use the gap and regain road speed smoothly

The opening turn is followed by controlled acceleration, a pedestrian observation and attention to a downhill slope. Maintain a safe speed within the limit while continuing to scan beyond the vehicle immediately ahead.

0:58

Prepare the lane entry and leave stopping space

Signal and check early for the next left turn, then leave useful space behind the queue. While stopped, scan the intersection and understand the movement that will occur when the light changes.

2:35

Wait behind the line while the earlier car occupies the junction

The lesson keeps the following car at the line while a previous vehicle waits to turn. Do not pack the intersection with a queue of waiting cars. Reassess your own signal, exit and gap before entering an appropriate waiting position.

3:42

Yield to the right-turner rather than turning alongside it

The opposing black car turns wide, demonstrating why an assumed lane destination is unreliable. Yield and turn behind it into your correct lane when the path is clear, rather than trying to occupy neighbouring lanes at the same time.
