Right Turn on Red Using Cross-Traffic Signals

Understand the specific cross-traffic-arrow example while keeping your own full stop, pedestrian checks, and yielding duties.

Video breakdown

Study the lesson by section

Each section below follows an explanation or demonstration in the video. Select a section to play from that point, then practise the skill with appropriate supervision.

0:03

Understand the specific signal arrangement

The video shows a right turn on red while a particular cross-traffic left-turn phase is active. Another driver's green arrow does not give you priority; your own red-light rules and the actual paths of all traffic still control the decision.

0:56

Stop completely before considering the turn

Make a full stop at the proper stop position. A promising gap or another traffic stream's signal is not permission to roll through your red light.

1:30

Check pedestrians and the right blind spot

Shoulder check for cyclists and scan the crosswalks, including people who may cross unexpectedly. Keep watching the area into which the car will turn even when pedestrian signals suggest no one should be crossing.

2:28

Identify the light rather than guessing its phase

The replay identifies the light and the left-turn-signal sign for that traffic stream. Use visible, correctly identified signals as information; if you cannot see clearly, do not assume a protected opportunity exists.

3:44

A yellow arrow warns the phase is ending

As the other turn phase ends, through traffic may soon receive green. The instructor distinguishes a fresh phase from an ending one; continue yielding and avoid relying on a signal that is about to change.

5:18

Do not generalize the example to opposing left turns

The instructor explicitly contrasts this arrangement with an opposing protected left turn that conflicts with your right turn. Check the destination lane, signs, and every conflicting path, then turn only when permitted and clear.
