Right Turns at Slip Lanes: Yield Signs, Traffic Lights & Hidden Conflicts

Use the slip lane’s own controls and anticipate conflicts as the main signal changes.

Video breakdown

Study the lesson by section

Each section below follows an explanation or demonstration in the video. Select a section to play from that point, then practise the skill with appropriate supervision.

0:01

Check the slip-lane entry and its pedestrian crossing

The layout includes a separate right-turn lane, a crossing and a yield sign. Check the right blind spot before entry and keep watching pedestrians. Read the controls governing this lane rather than assuming the through-road signal alone decides your turn.

1:14

A green through signal can still leave an opposing-turn conflict

An opposing driver may find a gap to turn left onto your receiving road. Even if they should choose another lane, they may turn wide. Obey the slip-lane yield and approach slowly enough to stop for a conflict.

3:22

On yellow, anticipate both clearing turns and the next phase

The opposing left-turner may be clearing while cross traffic is about to receive green. Keep both possibilities in view instead of focusing only on vehicles already coming from the left. The main signal is a clue to developing movements, not permission to ignore your yield.

5:13

On red, identify cross traffic and protected turning movements

A red through signal may release cross traffic or an opposing advance. Check the actual movement before joining the receiving road. A stopped queue on one approach does not prove that every conflicting stream is stopped.

6:49

Be ready to stop regardless of the through-road colour

The takeaway is that the slip-lane yield remains relevant in every phase. Choose a controlled approach based on visibility, pedestrians and traffic. The suggested coaching speed is not a universal limit, and a clearer-looking signal never replaces a safe gap.
