Right Turn on Red: Who Has the Green & Who Has Priority?

Identify protected movements and recheck pedestrians as the signal phase changes.

Video breakdown

Study the lesson by section

Each section below follows an explanation or demonstration in the video. Select a section to play from that point, then practise the skill with appropriate supervision.

0:25

Stop fully and ask which movement is being released

With your light red, stop and check turn restrictions, crossings and surrounding traffic. Seeing cross traffic stop does not establish that the intersection is clear; another approach may have a protected arrow.

1:47

Watch for an opposing left-turn advance

An opposing left-turning queue may be receiving its advance. Do not turn alongside it on the assumption every driver will stay in the expected lane. Your red-light turn must yield to permitted movements.

3:45

Use visible signals as evidence, not a substitute for checks

Sometimes a cross-traffic arrow is visible and helps explain what traffic is doing. Still confirm the full turn path, pedestrians and blind spot are clear. Do not rely on an inferred phase or another vehicle’s movement as proof that you may turn.

5:07

Wait when you cannot confidently assess the situation

The repeated examples emphasize understanding the live intersection rather than rolling through red. A right turn on red is optional; if the controls or gap are uncertain, remain stopped and wait for a clearer opportunity.

6:31

Recheck pedestrians when your light changes to green

After the advance ends, your green may arrive with a pedestrian walk signal. Do not carry an earlier clear-crossing assessment into that new phase. Refresh the crossing and right blind-spot checks immediately before the turn.
