Straight-Line Backing by the Curb Explained

Prepare, observe and make small corrections while backing slowly beside the curb.

Video breakdown

Study the lesson by section

Each section below follows an explanation or demonstration in the video. Select a section to play from that point, then practise the skill with appropriate supervision.

0:17

Pull over safely and finish parallel to the curb

Signal right, check mirrors and the right blind spot before moving toward the curb. The instructor names cyclists, scooters and other road users who may be beside the car. Finish parallel so the backing manoeuvre starts from a controlled position.

1:16

Signal your intention and complete the 360 check

Keep a right signal to communicate that you are not pulling out into traffic. Select reverse and check both shoulders and the rear before movement. Do not release the brake while still completing the observation sequence.

2:02

Use a stable posture for direct rear observation

The demonstration uses the left hand near the top of the wheel and the right arm behind the passenger seat to turn and look back. Maintain comfortable control and glance at the right mirror regularly to monitor the curb.

2:50

Back at walking pace and correct with small movements

Very low speed gives you time to notice drifting toward the curb or out into the road. Make small steering adjustments rather than large, hurried corrections. This manoeuvre demonstrates safety and accuracy, not how quickly you can reverse.
